Studium Generale is the wider field of study formed by the different activities of Field Studies. It brings together the two core teaching strands, Terms and Conditions and Figures of Eight, alongside residencies, seminars, research projects and other forms of encounter. Each is a school in itself, but none exists in isolation. Students move between them, returning to questions in different places, with different people and through different practices.

The Studium Generale is less a fixed curriculum than a way of studying. It is a space in which learning can be sustained, repeated and changed through experience. Students compose their own path through the programme, following lines of inquiry as they emerge and developing relationships between seemingly separate things. The school is therefore not a single territory but an archipelago, made up of different landings and the connections formed between them.

From 2027, the Studium Generale will develop into a two-year advanced study programme, supporting students in the development of independent research projects. The programme grows out of the teaching and encounters already taking place across Field Studies, and continues the question at the heart of the school: not simply what should we learn, but what might learning itself become?

In 2026–27, Field Studies is inviting a small group of students to take part in a pilot of the Studium Generale. The group will move through the year’s residencies and seminars, developing their own questions and ways of working alongside the wider Field Studies community. Their experience will help shape the curriculum as it develops, testing what a more open, roaming and collectively formed model of advanced study might be.
