Siobhan Tate has taught art in London state schools since 2003. For her master’s dissertation she used Pedagogy as a Performative Practice and Lacan’s Psychoanalytical Discourses to investigate the dynamics of authority and agency in the art classroom. Currently a second-year participant in MASS sculpture (mentoring and peer development) programme, Siobhan is developing Sputnik: a durational sculptural choreography that thrives on public encounter. Through a sustained physical negotiation between the artist’s body and the resistance of materials, the sculptural form of Sputnik emerges intuitively. Formed across articulated steel (which is wrestled and repositioned until an equilibrium is reached) clay is pushed to collapse and reformed. This bodily work regenerates both itself and its maker: material circulates into new form, while the creative act builds the artist’s physical and conceptual agency.
